The Readings

First Reading Acts of the Apostles 8:5-8, 14-17

Philip went to the principal city in Samaria and preached the Messiah to the people there. The crowds paid close attention to what Philip said, as they listened to him and saw the miracles that he performed. Evil spirits came out from many people with a loud cry, and many paralyzed and lame people were healed. So there was great joy in that city.

The apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had received the word of God, so they sent Peter and John to them. When they arrived, they prayed for the believers that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For the Holy Spirit had not yet come down on any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 66:1-3, 4-5, 6-7, 16, 20 – Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

Second Reading 1 Peter 3:15-18

Beloved: Have reverence for Christ in your hearts, and honor him as Lord. Be ready at all times to answer anyone who asks you to explain the hope you have in you, but do it with gentleness and respect. Keep your conscience clear, so that when you are insulted, those who speak evil of your good conduct as followers of Christ will become ashamed of what they say.

For it is better to suffer for doing good, if this should be God’s will, than for doing evil. For Christ died for sins once and for all, a good man on behalf of sinners, in order to lead you to God. He was put to death physically, but made alive spiritually,

Gospel John 14:15-21

Jesus said to his disciples, “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, who will stay with you forever. He is the Spirit, who reveals the truth about God. The world cannot receive him, because it cannot see him or know him. But you know him, because he remains with you and is in you.

“When I go, you will not be left all alone; I will come back to you. In a little while the world will see me no more, but you will see me; and because I live, you also will live. When that day comes, you will know that I am in my Father and that you are in me, just as I am in you.

“Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. My Father will love those who love me; I too will love them and reveal myself to them.”

Homily for the 6th Sunday of Easter

Prayers of the Faithful

The God who loves us hears and answers all prayer with mercy and compassion according to God’s divine plan. We lift our needs to our loving Father.

• That Pope Francis and all church leaders show all of us their choice to live and love as true witnesses to the ministry of our Lord and Savior, we pray: Risen Lord, hear our prayer.
• That all civic leaders work together to share God’s abundance with all people, especially during this time of the pandemic, we pray: Risen Lord, hear our prayer.
• That those who are most fragile, sick or burdened by life will know the support, care and compassion of all of us, we pray: Risen Lord, hear our prayer.
• That our students who are graduating this year know our support and prayers for their continued success as they go on for continued education or go out into the workforce, we pray: Risen Lord, hear our prayer.
• That as we make plans to return to a more open world we do so with thoughtfulness and compassion to those who are the most vulnerable and compromised among us, we pray: Risen Lord, hear our prayer.
• That  Robert & James Willis, John Baumgartner, Ruth & Richard Billmeyer, Doris Trausch, Jake & Mary Lou Jacobi, Gary Anglin, Robert & Hilda McGovern, Emil Herting, Marguerite Sweeney, Joan Bartels sister of Bevlynn Bartels, and all who have died will rejoice eternally in God’s loving presence, we pray: Risen Lord, hear our prayer.

Good and loving God, your Holy Spirit speaks for us, We pray that you grant what our advocate inspires us to ask, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Communion

Spiritual Communion Prayer

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
 

A Prayer for During the Pandemic

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe,
Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas.
We turn to you today as your beloved children.
We ask you to intercede for us with your Son,
as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother,
and gain for our nation and world,
and for all our families and loved ones,
the protection of your holy angels,
that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted,
we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance.
Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful,
wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing,
teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind.
Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence,
knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother,
health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection,
keep us in the embrace of your arms,
help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.
