We are invited to join Jesus in his desert fast and discover the power of Receiving God’s word.
The devil uses our most basic need, hunger, to tempt Jesus. Jesus responds with a quote from the Scripture: “One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Jesus’ ability to recall this passage from Deuteronomy (8:3) gave him the power to overcome his first temptation. We will see that remembered Scripture passages helped Jesus overcome every temptation. While we typically think of Communion as sustaining us, Jesus shows us the power of God’s word. We are sustained by receiving Communion; we are sustained by receiving God’s word.
Jesus waits to stretch our hearts as we encounter Him in service. The cost of food has emptied food-pantry shelves. Our Blue Bags for sharing food on the first weekend of the month are needed more than ever. An envelope for making a donation to our St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVDP) was included in the Advent mailing to all parishioner households. Those funds allow fellow parishioners to respond with compassion to our neighbors in need. For more information on donating to St. Vincent de Paul, visit https://www.svdpdubuqueiowa.org/donations.
