As we approach Lent, Jesus gives quite a challenge. When He instructs us how to give alms, pray, and fast, He does not talk about "if"; He talks about "when". He says, "When you give alms" (Mt 6:1), "When you pray" (Mt 6:5), and "When you fast" (Mt 6:16). How can we respond?
See below for three Lenten challenges.
The Rosary gives us the ability to reflect on the highpoints of Jesus' life. We created a shortened version of the Rosary to help us focus on the life of Jesus (click here to download and print). How many decades of the Rosary can we pray together during Lent?
How about "Fasting Fridays"? While we are called to abstain from meat on Fridays, what if we committed to fasting for a period of time every Friday? Three hours, six hours, nine hours, twelve hours? How many hours of fasting can we accumulate together during Lent?
How will you share your time, talent, and treasure this Lent? Reflect on giving your gifts to three items: 1/3 to St. Columbkille, 1/3 to another charity important to you, and 1/3 to something new to you. That last third might simply be doing less rather than more. Almsgiving is not only about giving, but discovering the needs of the community as well.
